Our son has always been sensitive.

He notices everything. He worries about disappointing people. He asks questions at night that seem much too big for a six-year-old. Recently, most of those questions have been about starting first grade.

What if his teacher doesn’t like him?

What if he can’t find his classroom?

What if the other kids already have friends?

What if he misses us and starts crying?

We answered every question the best we could. We toured the school. We showed him where we would pick him up. We reminded him that it was okay to feel nervous.

But I could tell our words weren’t reaching the part of him that was afraid.

That was the moment.

The story about purpose also gave us a beautiful way to remind him that adding another child to our family didn’t make him less important or less loved.

That night, as I tucked him in, he said, “You still know me, right?”

I told him, “I will always know you.”

I don’t think I’ll ever forget that conversation.

She saw the cover, covered her mouth, and yelled, “Mommy, that’s ME!” Then she hugged the tablet. I wish I had recorded it.

My son usually rushes through bedtime stories. This one made him slow down, point at every page, and ask questions. When we finished, he said, “Can we read my story again?”

We did.

I expected him to recognize his name, but I didn’t expect him to get so emotional about seeing himself in the story. He looked at me with the biggest smile and said, “God knows my name.”

I’ll be honest, my wife bought this and I thought it might be a little gimmicky.

I’m very cautious about uploading photos of my children anywhere, so I appreciated having a clear explanation of how the photo would be used.

The creation process was simple, the story arrived on time, and my son was thrilled with the result. Seeing three different pages with his face represented consistently made me feel much better about the quality too.

My four-year-old looked at the first page for a long time and then whispered, “Mommy, that boy is me.”

I’ll never forget his face.

I made the story for my younger son, but his older brother came over as soon as he heard all the excitement.
